The successful translation of innovative dental biomaterials and medical devices requires more than scientific discovery alone. It demands an integrated framework that connects fundamental biomaterials research, biological safety assessment, international standardization, regulatory evaluation, and clinical translation.
The Department and Research Institute of Dental Biomaterials and Bioengineering, Yonsei University College of Dentistry, has established a long-standing platform for education and multidisciplinary research in dental biomaterials. The Department was established in 1989, and the Research Institute was founded in 1992 as Korea’s first specialized research institute in dental biomaterials. Its research encompasses the physical, mechanical, chemical, and biological properties of dental materials, including polymers, ceramics, metals, composites, dental implants, tissue-engineering materials, and emerging dental technologies.
Complementing these academic activities, the Dental Device Testing and Evaluation Center, Yonsei University Health System provides a specialized infrastructure for the evaluation and regulatory translation of dental medical devices. Building upon dental-device testing activities initiated at Yonsei University in 1987, the Center was formally established in 2000 and has subsequently expanded its roles to include medical device testing and inspection, technical documentation review, and non-clinical testing, bridging scientific innovation with regulatory requirements and product development.
Together, these organizations form an integrated ecosystem linking research, characterization, biological evaluation, standardization, regulatory testing, and clinical translation. Through close collaboration among academia, industry, regulatory bodies, and international standardization organizations, Yonsei University aims to accelerate the development of safe, effective, and innovative dental biomaterials and medical devices and their translation from laboratory concepts into clinical practice.
This luncheon seminar will introduce the history, research capabilities, testing infrastructure, and translational activities of the Department and Research Institute of Dental Biomaterials and Bioengineering and the Dental Device Testing and Evaluation Center. Selected research and testing examples will illustrate how this integrated platform supports dental innovation throughout the entire development pathway, from materials science to international standards and regulatory implementation.
