Benefits of multiple ion-releasing bio-active materials for disease control/management

Recently, much attention has been paid to bio-active dental materials, focusing on their ability to remineralize or stimulate hard tissue formation. However, bio-active functions useful for dental treatment/care are beyond such simple properties. Control of bacterial infection, prevention of inflammation, and promotion of healing and tissue regeneration can be also listed as functions beneficial to achieve better treatments and preventive care. In this regard, multiple ion-releasing technologies that enable exhibition of various bio-active functions are of great interest.

On the market, a couple of materials incorporating multiple ion-releasing fillers are available. Among them, S-PRG filler, which releases F, BO33−, Sr2+, Na+, Al3+, and SiO32−, is highly innovative. S-PRG filler exhibits various bio-active functions such as tooth strengthening, promotion of mineralization, acid neutralization, inhibition of bacteria and fungi, inhibition of MMP, and enhancement of cell activity. This filler can be utilized in different material forms, and composites/adhesive/luting cements, coating resin, fissure sealant, and polishing gel containing S-PRG filler, so-called GIOMER, are commercially available.

This lecture summarizes the bio-active functions of S-PRG filler and scientific evidence of usefulness of S-PRG filler and GIOMER for disease control/management to promote oral health.
